About the Book

In this digital age of the 21st Century, the decline of interest in the things of God and the Church should not be allowed, because the knowledge explosion through technology with access to emerging concepts should not distract us from thinking about our God. God is related to life in general and all emerging knowledge comes from God who created the creative man that made the devices…

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN SECONDARY EDUCATION

The world is large and life itself is complex. So, education (Rufai,2014), as an effective means of developing the full capacities and potentials of the human resource”, cannot achieve its objective if teachers continue to teach students with a unidirectional curriculum like STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology,  Engineering and Mathematics.

What is meant here is that though the educational curriculum needs to be selective, it also needs to be comprehensive.  Educational Technology is able to do its work as a potent problem solving educational tool because it is characteristically eclectic. This implies that EdTech is open to accept ideas and becomes an interdisciplinary science.

In general, this work is of the view that no single learning experience or subject can answer all the questions of the human person; especially as life becomes more complex in this digital age. This is why STEAM education has become necessary for our students and comes to us through research as timely educational innovation. Evidently, STEAM is more comprehensive than STEM.

Introduction

In a short page dedicated to Teachers, a question was posited: who is a teacher? Immediately many descriptions and qualifications followed as follows; “some say a good man or woman, fun loving, passionate and very curious. Another group says a rock star and game changer anywhere anytime. Others say awesome and goofy. And for many other folk, an artist and an engaging magician etc” (Alozie, 2015). The writer ended up by saying that teacher are world builders, which directly are world builders, which directly catches a glimpse of the link between teaching and the society.

As another author put it; “if you think that you can work alone and achieve success in your life without needing the help of anybody, then you are wrong. That is because when you are stuck in the middle of something, you look up to that one person who can guide your way (Ievedshedid, 2017). And that one person is no other but your teacher.

REVITALIZATION OF EDUCATION IN A DISTRESSED ECONOMY

Change happens every day. Today the use of technological gadgets has overtaken over every aspect of our lives. Amidst all these in our country Nigeria, we are recently facing the worst heat of distressed economy, which affects us as well as our education

Whichever is the case, education is one thing that remains constant all through life; and it is our duty to revitalize education in a distress economy. This is why the rise of educational technology (Edu-Tech) isn’t just about the availability of advanced tools; it’s also rather about addressing some of the challenges inherent to education (Tierney, 2020). This paper presents the Flipped Classroom Technique as one possible part way towards the victory of our educational revitalization.

My teaching subject Literature in English is my area of concern in this research. Literature in English Language is one of the areas of education that may require immediate application of some new edu-tech dynamic tool-kits for a more efficient pedagogy and for better performances. In Nigeria in fact, the role of Literature in English Language in the classroom has been re-assessed; and many view literary texts as providing rich linguistic input, effective stimuli for students to express themselves; it is also viewed as a potential source of learner motivation (Ugoiyi, 2016). Some educational authors think that the flipped classroom can leverage a positive impact on the students achievement in the  teaching and learning of Literature in English.

SWEET MOTHER

Mothers are special gifts and deserve to be celebrated. Even though our Igbo women are always ready to play their roles in the family through service in the kitchen and otherwise, they remain highly respectable people. Husbands should not beat their wives. Let children never forget the intrinsic tie of relationship that existed between them and their mothers. May our mothers remain very respectable and honorable through their natural maternal cares and love to humanity, because a good mother has no duplicate and deserves to be celebrated for so many reasons which this simple paper has come to reveal.

In general mothers are lovely and have a great influence. In a great book titled ‘The Anatomy of Female Powers”, it was made clear that we all took after our mothers, not only by being their flesh and blood, but also through their motherly care. As a matter of fact, that book made it clear that the way we look, speak, walk and think at times are related to the nature of the motherly nurture we received from the time of our birth. Up till today, some people still believe that their nose shape, mouth shape, sitting posture etc, were reshaped for the better by their sweet mums. All these have caused uncontrollable love for mothers. I remember when we were in Primary Schools, it was noticeable that many fights arose whenever any child was insulted by just saying ‘ Your Mother’. Many middle school teachers know what I am saying even more than me. In short, deep love for mothers is an instinct…

GREAT TRUTHS...

…Why somebody could be qualified by his or her actions is because all humans have in them an inner power to engage or not to engage in a particular action. More so, everyone has the inner power to know the value of particular action before making a choice i.e. knowing what is good to be good and what is bad to be bad. If all these are true, then one is held responsible for ones fictions, all these border around the human power of freedom.

A human person always knows that bad actions are bad and that good actions are good. This knowledge is so powerful to the extent that even a hoodlum does not appreciate theft of his money from his own child. By this we recall that good is always appreciated and made open while bad is always kept within the borders of the secret. This is because every rational human person is made of body and soul. While the body punctuates our existence in the material world, our soul is enriched with other supernatural powers like mind, spirit, and will. Since we are rational, we are made to be reasonable and reasonableness follows some order and order naturally leads to the good and the truth…

KEY TO YOUR REFLECTIONS

As human history makes its progressive trek on the shifting sands of time; the problem of our world continues to change in nature and kind. Today ours is an age of knowledge and great enlightenment. No one can say today that the problem of our time is the problem of knowledge or how to know; rather we are faced today with the problem of understanding or how to understand. With the highly raised profile of science and technology, our era celebrates the great wizardry of computerization and very effective powers of information technology. The effect is that every man and woman is eventually exposed to much new data or information which were hitherto unknown. Yet in the midst of this piquant liberty we still see our world lastly sinking headlong into a dungeon of drab immoralities and terror. This is because we lack the understanding of all we know.

Understanding in wider use connotes the realization of the “meaning, nature and explanation” of what is known in relation to the purpose or end of the knower. Understanding of knowledge this sense is Wisdom. No wonder the biblical scholar – James Crenshaw, earlier said that ‘wisdom is the quest for self- understanding in terms of relationship with things, people and the creator’. This is right, since every deep rooted understanding includes self- understanding. Obviously, understanding is possible though wisdom because wisdom is not knowledge but an applicability of knowledge in relation to man’s temporal end and or ultimate end. What it practically means is that as we enjoy the flavor of achieving our big desired results through knowledge, wisdom lies in allowing the human ultimate purpose (destiny of being with God at last) to direct our temporal goals (our day to day ventures). This mental disposition makes knowledge wholesome by keeping it on its correct track of purpose. Otherwise our great knowledge becomes unguided, or at least misguided mud so misunderstood.

INTRODUCTION

Contrary to a vast array of opinions which tend to say that Edutech may not be able to function well in Africa, this work has come to uncover many reasons why Ed-tech is not only a possibility but even a great opportunity for Africa and the world.

According to Eze (2018), “Educational Technology is an eclectic or integrated discipline which provides a common ground for knowledge and ideas from other fields such as: Psychology, Sociology, Engineering, Communication and Cybernetics, Graphic Arts, Economics, Management, Philosophy and others”. Looking at this definition, this work thinks that this Edtech ability to provide a common ground for knowledge more than ever will be an opportunity for Africa to move fast on the valid lane towards an African approach to education. It is the perspective of this work and those of other educationists that many economically challenged countries may have not yet discovered the most adequate education for themselves. And Edutech has some operational efficacy for addressing such challenges through its trouble shooting powers of System Approach and Instructional Systems Design. This way Edtech can unearth those challenges, resolve them as well as build and provide an educational system tailored towards the societal needs.

This is not to say that that Edtech will help us to limit our education to Africa and its values. It is already a widely acceptable point that though an Educational System should be rooted on its historical and cultural background, it is important that it must also align with the global standard and core curriculum for a number of reasons. These reasons according to some educationists include: Quality Content and Educational Integrity, International Recognitions of Educational Qualifications, Possibility of Exchange Programs and Research Partnership as well as General Global Competitiveness. This work now comes to say that Edtech serves Africa in the both aforesaid counts. On the same note, Flipped Classroom garnished with Emotional Intelligence during in-class-time of flipped learning is predicted by this work as possible toolkits through which Edtech can turn to a great opportunity for Africa.
